Now what is Faith?

Faith is unshakeable trust!

Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your pathProverbs 3:5-6).

Growing up I had my perception of what I thought faith was. Even after reading Hebrews 11 a number of times I thought I knew all there was to know about faith, what else was there to know? But it was not until it hit me that I realised faith is deeper than I thought it was. I realised that it is not until we have to take the test of faith ourselves that we see whether we truly have faith or not and whether we can withstand the test of faith. I also realised that there are different levels when it comes to faith. During my years of education I found it easy to have faith that I would somehow pass my exams, I also knew I had faith in God and believed that He existed. But coming out of University and having to deal with ‘bigger’ things, faith seemed to get harder. I mean when it is something you have previously been faced with and overcome it’s easier to have faith right? But what happens when you are faced with something new, something different, now that’s where the true test of faith lies.

Faith is a choice and is not necessarily something that we are born with, although some people have the ‘gift of faith’. It sounds easy but it requires a lot of effort, strength, commitment & determination. It also requires works which means you cannot just say you have faith, but you must show it and choose it every single day no matter how things may look in the physical.

Faith don’t make it easy, Faith makes it possible

Steve Harvey
When you take that first step in faith, keep on holding on!

Faith in practice

Let us look at a hypothetical example which some of you may be able to relate to. Imagine there was a male named Robert. Robert has a wife and a child but he has no job. He has been waiting on God for another child and for the provision of a job. Robert easily has faith that God will provide another child as He did the first, but in terms of him getting another job his faith is zero as he has been waiting for a few years. Now instead of choosing to have faith, he decides to worry, leading him to anxiety. Does Robert truly have complete faith if he believes in one thing and not the other?

How many of us choose to have faith only in certain areas of our life but in certain areas we think ‘no I don’t need faith, I can handle that myself’ or ‘this thing is too big for me to have faith in’? This is what Robert thought and we can see where this led him. Faith is more than merely believing, and it is more than believing in the things that are easy to believe in. It is actively walking in that belief even when it seems impossible.

Faith is the evidence of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen – Hebrews 11:1

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

Martin Luther King Jr.

I don’t know where you are on your journey of faith or what you may require faith for in this season but just take the first step, the rest will become clearer on the way. Remember, the more you move up a staircase, the more the rest of the staircase becomes visible. Whether you need faith for that dream job, faith in your health, faith in your finances or even faith in your relationships, pray and have faith that all things will work out for your good.

However, we also need to learn to have faith in the right things and not confuse faith for foolishness. Sometimes we have faith in the wrong things. If you know God has told you to leave a certain relationship, bro, sis, why are you still having faith that the relationship will work? This goes for friendships as well by the way. Or if you know you are doing something illegal, don’t try and think you can keep walking in faith that you will not get caught. I have nothing further to say on this point!

There is so much more to talk about concerning faith but there is only so much that can go in one blog post. The main thing to take away is that faith is the evidence of things not seen and that same faith can answer prayers. So whatever it is you may be waiting on God for, while you wait choose faith!

Final word of encouragement

Positive affirmation – I choose faith over anxiety, faith over fear, faith over worry, faith over doubts, faith over depression, I choose faith!

I’m sure that all of us could probably do with a little more faith to keep us going in this journey of life. Study faith, walk in faith and keep choosing faith every single day.
